ABOUT BALLON D'OR FÉMININ

History

The Ballon d'Or Féminin was established in 2018 by France Football, aimed at recognizing the best female football player in the world. This award mirrors the prestigious Ballon d'Or, which has celebrated male players since 1956. The introduction of the women's award was a significant step towards acknowledging the growing popularity and talent in women's football.

The award is determined by a panel of international journalists who vote based on players' performances over the calendar year. The voting criteria include individual and team performances, as well as overall impact on the sport.

Previous Winners

Since its inception, the Ballon d'Or Féminin has been awarded to several exceptional players:

  • 2018: Ada Hegerberg (Norway) - The first winner of the award, Hegerberg was recognized for her incredible season with Olympique Lyonnais, where she scored 15 goals in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

  • 2019: Megan Rapinoe (USA) - Rapinoe's outstanding performance at the FIFA Women's World Cup, where she led the US to victory, earned her the title.
