ABOUT THE EVENTS

WOMEN's OLYMPIC FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

DATES:

The women's football tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will run from July 25 to August 10, 2024.

 

TEAMS

This tournament, the eighth of its kind, will feature 12 teams. Twelve teams qualified through regional tournaments and the host nation, France, received automatic entry. Teams represent various global football confederations, reflecting a diverse competition field.

The following nations qualified for Paris 2024:

  4. Brazil (Copa América Femenina semi-finalists)

  5. Colombia (Copa América Femenina semi-finalists)

  6. New Zealand (OFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament winner)

  7. Spain (UEFA Women's Nations League finalist)

  8. Japan (AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament)

  9. Australia (AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament)

  10. Germany (UEFA Women's Nations League third-place play-off winner)

  11. Nigeria (CAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament)

  12. Zambia (CAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament)

WHERE:

Matches will be held across seven French cities: Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Paris, and Saint-Étienne, with the final hosted at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Décines-Charpieu.

FORMAT

The competition begins with a group stage, where the 12 teams are divided into three groups of four. Each team plays three matches within their group. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout stage, which includes the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final. This format ensures a rigorous competition leading to the crowning of the Olympic champions.

NWSL x LIGA MX FEMENIL SUMMER CUP

WHAT:

The women's soccer tournament is featuring clubs from North America and includes teams from the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States and Liga MX Femenil in Mexico.

 

WHEN & WHERE:

The inaugural competition is kicking off 19 July with matches held in both the U.S. and Mexico. The championship match is staged at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, October 25 October 2024, This tournament is comparable to the Leagues Cup for men’s teams from Major League Soccer and Liga MX.

 

TEAMS:

The 2024 edition will feature 20 teams: all 14 from the NWSL and six from Liga MX Femenil (Club América, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Pachuca, Club Tijuana, and Tigres UANL) based on their performance in the 2023 Apertura and Clausura tournaments.

FORMAT:

The top four teams will advance to the semifinals in early August, with the final scheduled for late October. The group stage coincides with the NWSL's break for the 2024 Summer Olympics and international matches.

NATIONAL WOMEN'S SOCCER LEAGUE

National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is the highest league of women's soccer/football in the United States

2024 Expansion teams: Bay FC and Utah Royals (the latter returns)

2024 Playoff season: 9 November - 23 November 

Season start: The season is scheduled to begin with the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup, a Supercup match between the reigning playoff champion (NJ/NY Gotham FC) and NWSL Shield winner San Diego Wave FC, on March 15, 2024. The regular season will begin the following day. The league will pause for a month between July 8 and August 18 for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Format: The top eight teams in the final standings at the end of the NWSL season qualify for the playoffs and the quarter-finals.

Relegation / Promotion: No relegation / promotion as NWSL is a franchise league
